The South Central Community Alliance to Promote Education is a $3.2 million dollar, 3-year grant, funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc. This grant involves several programs including:
- an Early Childhood, Parenting, and Family Intervention component called Early Impressions;
- a School Improvement and Higher Student Achievement component;
- an adult and family literacy component;
- and a Workforce and Career Development and Lifelong Learning component.
These programs are being implemented in Lawrence, Martin, Orange, and Washington Counties in Indiana.
- Across these four counties, the challenges that face us include:
- a 22% failure rate in kindergarten readiness;
- a 12% non-graduation rate in high school students;
- and the fact that 16% of the adults over the age of 25 cannot read.
It is our hope that through the South Central CAPE initiative that we can make a positive impact.
